i don't know what advantage i had. >> you had to be in the meeting yesterday. >> let's start off with the investigation into who killed colorado's top prison official. kristen dahlgren is at the el paso county sheriff's office in colorado springs. kristen, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, lester. that suspected white supremacist hasn't officially been named a suspect in the murders here in colorado but this morning evidence does appear to be growing and we now have one more really bizarre twist. in the charred crime scene new clues. the dramatic high-speed chase and shootout thursday was captured on a cell phone and now a search warrant obtained by nbc news indicates shell casings recovered at the scene in texas are the same brand and caliber used in the brazen murder of tom clements, colorado's top prison official. >> we're hoping with the forensic review of his vehicle and the searching of the vehicle we'll learn more. >> reporter: the gunman who died of a single shot to the head is

identified as 28-year-old evan spencer, a colorado parolee with known ties to a white supremacist group in colorado prisons. >> they are very quick to attack or even attempt to kill their own members if they don't follow orders. >> reporter: denver police say there's a strong indication he may have been involved in another crime. the murder of 27-year-old pizza delivery man nathan leon in goldongol golden, colorado, on sunday. and colorado governor is an old friend of ebel's dad and mentioned evan ebel's case in a press conference this week talking about why he chose tom clements to head colorado prisons. >> when i first interviewed him, we talked about administrative segregation. i had an old friend whose son

had gone on a wrong track and been put into administrative segregation for a long period of time. solitary confinement. >> he had a bad streak in him. no one would explain it. it was there at an early age. >> reporter: really just a strange coincidence. the governor insists the family ties had nothing to do with ebel getti intin inting paroled. he was paroled after serving his full term. the prisons here in colorado remain on lockdown through this weekend. >> all right. kristen dahlgren, thank you. police in georgia meantime searching for clues this morning in a horrific shooting that killed a 1-year-old boy. two teens are in custody but investigators are saying very little about a motive. >> reporter: the deadly shooting of a 1-year-old baby rocked the

small town of brunswick. >> we have two arrests of the persons who committed this horrendous act. >> reporter: sherry west said two teens approached her as she approached her son in a stroller and demanded money. >> i told him i didn't have any money. and he said give me your money or i'm going to kill you and i'm going to shoot your baby. >> reporter: west said one of the suspects shot her near the ear and her leg and then did the unthinkable. >> all of a sudden he walked over and shot my baby in the face. he must have died instantly. >> reporter: several neighbors called 911. one man says he saw west just moments after the shooting. >> she picked the baby up and laid it on the ground and started administer are cpr. >> reporter: west was taken to the hospital with a minor leg wound. armed police went door to door searching for suspects and then late friday afternoon the police chief announced the arrests of two teenagers, one 14 years old,

the other 17. >> the charges are murder. first-degree murder. >> both of them? >> yes. >> i'm relieved. i'm relieved that the man that shot my baby was caught and i hope that we will get a conviction. >> reporter: as questions swirl around the case, one mother is dealing with the toughest question. why? >> that story sickens me. >> it does. it really just leaves you speechless to think anyone can do that. >> that much evil. we'll switch gears and talk about something on the minds of a lot of folks in this part of the country. a lot of this country in fact. where is spring? the season officially began wednesday. it certainly doesn't feel like it today. colder than normal temperatures nationwide and a big storm rolling across the country now. >> dylan is outside on the plaza with a look at what's going on. good morning. >> good morning. i wish i knew exactly what was

going on. it is bitterly cold out here again today. most of the country will see temperatures well below average. we're looking at a foot of snow in some parts of the country. so no matter how big a fan you are of winter, i think a lot of you could just be plain over it. ♪ spring. when flowers bloom. trees blossom. a time to ditch the coat and hat and get outside and enjoy the sunshine. >> it's not spring. it's freezing out here. >> what happened? the calendar says winter is over. obviously the calendar hasn't taken a look out the window. across the country snow has been falling all week and more is on the way. nasty driving conditions from washington state to kentucky. in denver last night, the u.s. national soccer team played in a driving snowstorm. officials even halted the match

temporarily to shovel the field. and in maine, luckily the first minor league ball game isn't for another two weeks because the baseball diamond is covered by snow. northern new york state has seen up to four feet of snow since the first day of spring. jackets required on the carolina beaches. >> punxsutawney phil, king of the groundhogs. >> didn't punxsutawney phil say winter would be over soon? the famous groundhog could be in big trouble with the law too. butler county, ohio, is jokingly suing the groundhog for misrepresentation of early spring. phil fooled us and there's no telling exactly when we'll be able to get rid of the winter gear for good. >> i can look forward to it. take off the coat. the boots. i'll be fine. hats, coats, gloves. >> this is not spring. spring has not sprung for sure. >> spring certainly hasn't sprung.

take a look at some of the temperatures. denver, high today of 23 degrees. that's more than 30 degrees below normal. and it is going to stay very frigid out that way and across most of the country for at least the weekend and even into next week. we have winter storm warnings and watches and advisories all across the plains stretching into the midwest for this weekend's snowstorm. it is even going to move eastward by monday. the heavy snow is falling across denver where already nearly six inches of snow has fallen. northwestern parts of kansas and parts of nebraska will see up to 3 to 6 inches of snow and we could see a foot of snow through central indiana and moving eastward into hagerstown, maryland, we could see up to a foot of snow out of this storm system. only about an inch or so in new york city and most of the i-95 corridor won't see a lot of accumulation. it's all interior as we go through this weekend. severe storms are also possible from texas right on over into the florida panhandle where we

could see hail and tornadoes. especially tonight. >> i'm tempted to boo you but i won't. >> we know it's not her fault. she's just the messenger. >> let's get a check of the morning's other top stories. jenna wolfe is standing by. >> we're going to start today with a tragic scene at the airport in alabama where a 10-year-old boy was killed when a big sign weighing hundreds of pounds fell on top of him. the boy and his family were walking through birmingham international airport when the digital sign came down on top of him. the 10-year-old boy could not be saved. sad story there. president obama is on the last leg of his middle east trip spending a few hours in an ancient city before heading back home. he pledged to help jordan deal with the influx of refugees fleeing the civil war in syria. historic meeting between pope francis and his predeces r

predecessor, pope benedict. the two will have lunch together. that will be a power lunch. a meeting of this kind has not happened in at least 600 years. no pressure for that lunch at all, right? none. breaking news overnight. the senate has just approved a $3.7 trillion budget. meanwhile, the budget crisis and congressional sequester has claimed another victim. air traffic control towers at small and medium sized airports across the country. pete williams has more and joins us now. pete, good morning. >> reporter: jenna, good morning. the faa says it must take this step to meet the goal of cutting more than $600 million out of its budget so starting in two weeks it will shut down air traffic control towers in 38 states affecting operations at 149 small and medium sized airports nationwide. this is not expected to have much impact on commercial airline schedules but it will affect operations at airports like frederick municipal in

maryland where private planes operate. the towers will shut down because the faa is laying off the contract controllers. another example, greenville, south carolina, which handles an average of 80 flights a day. these airports will not shut down completely because most planes can land without controllers but it could put more demand on other faa facilities which will have their own problems coping with layoffs. the group that speaks for private plane owners calls this extremely disappointing and says the faa, the same federal agency for assuring aviation safety is taking steps to compromise it. jenna? >> pete williams, thank you very much. it's confirmed that was a tornado that touched down in washington state this week on thursday. some people reported seeing a funnel cloud and the national weather service did indeed confirm it was a tornado which is rare for this time of year. rare especially for washington state. finally, even though the whole point of going on a shark dive is to see sharks, it's the thing you just say but you

really just kind of want to spend the day on the boat and get tan. am i right? am i right? i thought so. a group of people on the water in south africa got more than an awesome tan. a meet and greet with the great white shark. the guy was supposed to see a passing shark. that's what he signed up and paid for. instead the shark ignored the bait and wedged its head inside the cage. somehow he avoided the shark's bite by ducking his head. that guy's kids will have the best show and tell video of all time for the rest of their lives. he's going to win first grade, second grade, third, grade and fourth grade he can reuse that video. >> i did that in the cage. they are ticklish behind the gill if you scratch it. >> you made him laugh. >> they get very close. you feel you are protected in this cage. at least you hope. >> why do they have to make the cage so wide? >> you can't to get a view. >> there's a better way to do

on friday morning though, ryan seacrest was at the children hospitals of orange county opening a state of the art media student for young patients. >> what's your favorite album or favorite song? >> reporter: patients like raul who have been here for almost a month appreciate the chance to hit the airwaves. >> it's actually really cool to have a studio inside a hospital. it makes me feel good because someone cares about us, the patients. >> reporter: becoming a producer has been a life-long dream for the 20 year old who is now spinning tunes instead of concentrating on his illness. >> i can learn something that i would have learned in school. i can learn it here in the hospital. >> reporter: seacrest believes a few minutes in the studio can make a world of difference for these kids. >> you love baseball. what do you love about baseball? >> it's a competitive sport but it doesn't matter if you win or lose, it matters if you have fun. that's the best part. >> it gives them a chance to

so enjoy the warm sunshine while we got it because rain is on the way. >> thank you very much, anthony. we begin with a developing story in san francisco where four people now recovering this morning after a shooting at a nightclub. police say the shooting happened outside the 330 rich nightclub near the intersection of rich street and third street not far from att park. witnesses say there was a fight which escalated and ended in gunfire around 1:00 this morning. three of the victims went to the hospital by ambulance. one other person went to the hospital on his own. officials say one of the victims is in critical condition this morning. the others are expected to be okay. no word yet on suspects or motive. coming up this morning on "today in the bay," san jose police releasing a photo of a man they say is responsible for the city's latest homicide. why police say he stabbed a woman to death and where he may be headed now. plus, a bay area principal turned crime fighter. what this man did to help protect his school from a thief.

we are back on this saturday morning, the 23rd day of march, 2013. a big thank you to this lovely crowd that has gathered out here with us on the plaza. a nice showing. folks sharing their weekend with us. i'm erica hill alongside lester holt, jenna wolfe and dylan dreyer. we have something called huffing. you may have heard about it in the past. it's expanding. experts say it's a dangerous way to get a quick high. it recently claimed the life of a 14-year-old honor student. her parents are speaking out hoping to avoid another tragedy. then valerie harper reunited with her "mary tyler moore" co-stars after going public with her cancer crisis. we'll tell you more about that coming up. tonight is the night.

move eastward over the course of this weekend and then eventually the east coast by monday. we're looking at three to six inches across a good swath of the middle of the country. up to six to nine inches and even up to 12 inches across parts of central indiana moving on into ohio and inland areas through maryland could end up with another 6 to 9 inches of snow. this also comes with severe storms. this is most likely today and tonight where we will see the possibility of isolated tornadoes across mississippi later on tonight. otherwise, hail and damaging winds. pouring rain in birmingham, alabama. this is all part of the same system and by tomorrow it will start to move into the midwest with a chance of stronger storms occurring across the southeast on sunday and we could end up with an inch or so of snow in new york city by monday as the storm continues to move eastward. according to the national weather service, they say the rest of april should be >> good morning from the weather

quick high. a 14-year-old honor student died this week after inhaling a common household product. her parents are speaking out hoping to avoid another tragedy. >> reporter: 14-year-old aria was home alone for a couple hours when her older sister found the straight a honor student dead in her room holding the can of keyboard cleaner. >> she had it attached to her mouth. she had actually taped her nostrils shot. >> reporter: los angeles area authorities say she was huffing the cleaner. a way of getting high by inhaling things such as glue, hair spray and household cleaners. what kids may not realize is the damage they're doing to their still developing bodies. >> brain damage is very, very common because you're inhaling it so quickly it's going right to your brain. >> i'm positive my daughter didn't realize that it had the potential to kill her. >> reporter: what parents may

imagine you're a small college and your basketball team makes it all of the way to the ncaa playoffs but you don't have a travel pep band so you borrow one. >> that's what happened to iona college. they needed a band to help them cheer on the team during friday night's big ncaa game. what do they do? they got help from a band in ohio despite a little bit of a conflict of interest. firing up the crowd last night in the middle of march madness, the stebbins high school band. they played in their own backyard on national television as the buckeyes took on iona college. she and the bandmates are life-long fans of ohio state in a state that bleeds scarlet and gray. there was a twist.
